Forget Everything You Think You Know

Elif returned home exhausted from a long day at work, her mind filled with the same thoughts:

‘I must work harder, say yes to every opportunity, only then can I be successful.’ But in recent weeks, she had been feeling constantly tired and scattered. No matter how hard she tried, things weren't going as she wanted. She sat down at her desk, looked at her computer screen, but the to-do list just kept growing. She paused for a moment and thought: ‘Am I doing something wrong? Is trying to handle everything what's wearing me out?’

The next morning, when she took her coffee out onto the balcony, she saw her elderly neighbour, Mr Cemil, working in his garden. Mr Cemil was a calm and disciplined man she had known for years; his garden was always neat and tidy. Elif couldn't resist asking: "Mr Cemil, how is it that everything in your life is so organised and efficient? And you never seem stressed?‘ Cemil smiled, rubbing his hands on the soil as he replied: ’Elif, it's all about discipline and making the right choices. Instead of expending effort randomly, you need to know what to focus on and what steps to take. That's real progress. Working hard isn't enough; strategy and patience are essential."

Elif, as soon as she got home that day, broke her tasks down into small, manageable steps. She prioritised and chose the truly important tasks. Though it felt challenging at first, she soon noticed that things were moving faster, her energy was rising, and her motivation was increasing. Small steps can make a big difference.

The following week, she aimed to get up early in the mornings to exercise. At first, getting out of bed seemed very difficult. At that moment, she remembered Mr Cemil's words: ‘Small but regular steps make a big difference in the long run.’ She placed her trainers by the door before going to bed and when she got up in the morning, she moved automatically.

Willpower alone did not bring success; it was the combination of system and routine that did. This small but disciplined step increased Elif's motivation and self-esteem.

Elif began to apply the same method in her work and social life. Instead of saying ‘yes’ to every invitation or project, she moved forward by choosing only those that would add value to her life. Although her friends were sometimes surprised, Elif felt more free, focused, and productive. She had learned to use her energy correctly and to spend her time and attention efficiently. Discipline and the right choices had saved her from exhaustion and disorganisation.

One day, while working on a major project at the office, she tried to do everything perfectly. But this time she tried a different approach; she broke her tasks down into smaller parts, prioritised them, and proceeded with regular, disciplined steps. The result was astonishing; the project was completed both on time and successfully. When effort and discipline combined, success was inevitable.

As the weeks passed, Elif realised she had changed the rhythm of her life. She was no longer striving randomly; she was taking each step in a planned and disciplined manner. She was managing her energy correctly, making the right choices, and understanding the value of effort. Each small victory gave her confidence for the next step and fuelled her motivation.

One evening, while looking at Mr Cemil from her balcony, Elif thought: ‘The way to progress in life is not just to work hard; it is to make the right choices, take disciplined steps, and use effort consciously.’ At that moment, she realised that forgetting everything she thought she knew was the beginning of gaining a new understanding and true strength. Now she was both strong and free; her life was progressing through conscious effort and the right choices.

Human beings constantly desire things in this life. In fact, it is a good thing to desire. Because if they did not desire, they would not be able to meet their basic needs, such as food and shelter, which are necessary for life. So where do human desires start to become a problem for them?

When they cannot manage their desires, humans begin to experience problems. Just like Elif...

However, another way to manage desires is to break them down into smaller pieces. As a result, humans can achieve their big desires. And thus, by pressing the right button instead of all the buttons, they can be among the winners in life.

So how do you find the right button?..
